Alberto Maté Asenjo

Alberto Maté (born in Madrid in 1974 and resident in Palma de Mallorca since 2011) is a self-taught street artist who began surrounding himself with pencils and brushes from a very young age.
A boundless lover of the animal world, this is a reference that lives on in his pictorial universe, as does the influence of comics. With adolescence and the discovery of the airbrush and his curiosity, his style acquired a personality of its own, which infects the viewer with strength and joy and plays with their understanding.
Maté knew how to channel that youthful energy into his art, resulting in the vivid colors and lysergic effects that are still present in his work today. A play on dimensions, perspectives, and meanings that take us on a hallucinogenic and entertaining journey with a futuristic essence, where nothing is what it seems, captured in every object that has passed through his hands.
From large-format murals (interior and exterior) to portraits, trompe l’oeil, and theatrical sets, Alberto Maté also works with a variety of techniques and materials, which have fueled his curiosity and helped him become the versatile and eclectic artist he is today.
There is no doubt that Maté has become a leading painter on the island, where he has exhibited in both public and private spaces (Museum of Decorative Arts, Caixa Forum Foundation, Sa Nostra Foundation, etc.). But his works, which transcend language and borders, have also traveled throughout Spain and to places as far afield as Morocco, Italy, Sweden, and the United States, Art Basel-Miami Beach, SCOPE International Contemporary Art Show, thus standing out on the American art scene. In Sweden, he was part of Artishow from its inception and for several years participated in numerous exhibitions in galleries throughout the country.
Accustomed to painting live, this artist is particularly at home on the street, where he began his career. He paints for hundreds of people. In 2017, during La Nit de l’Art, he collaborated with Jose Aranda to create a 2×2-meter painting in Palma de Mallorca’s Plaza Mayor. In 2018, he painted a work live for the recording of a documentary about Miró. That same year, Canal 4 TV’s Artistas program featured him and his art in a program about him.
He participated in the assembly of Spain’s largest painting, El Cristo de los Gitanos, at the Mayte Espinola Museum in Marmolejo (Jaén).
Currently, his studio is located between Palma de Mallorca (Spain) and Cologne (Germany).
